This April again we had our Kyu exams in our club.
Such a test is always a special moment in training that goes beyond mere graduation and a new belt color. You should never forget: The only purpose of the belt is to prevent the jacket from unraveling or the trousers from slipping down.
The examinees and their training partners prepare for the exams for weeks. This is usually the most intensive phase in everyday training. A variety of techniques are internalized, including the basic techniques of Dju Su, falling school and legal basics for self-defense as well as realistic defense techniques for various attack scenarios.
This time we had seven candidates for the 5th Kyu, the yellow belt. This test is special because it is the first belt test. In addition to the techniques to be demonstrated, the exam procedures are still new territory for many. There was some excitement as they stepped onto the mat for a group test.
In the end, the 5th Kyu exams were completed confidently and seven tight yellow knots were tied around the waist.
The masters were able to present the 4th Kyu (orange belt) once and the 3rd Kyu (green belt) three times. Not only does the number of techniques to be demonstrated increase with each level. The examinees also demonstrate that they can now master these skills confidently, apply them in realistic attack scenarios and safely fend off attacks until the attackers are restrained. The principle always applies: “What works is good.”
We were able to see three impressive and different exams for the 3rd Kyu.
In order to lure the examinees out of their reserve, the masters themselves also went to the mat. to take on the role of uke every now and then. The examinees also coped well with this and showed that although a changing stature or the movements of a uke that they have not trained with is special, it is not an insurmountable obstacle.
In the end we saw eleven excellent tests and would like to thank the masters, the training partners, the examinees and everyone who was present for successful tests and a little more color on their hips.
